Col. Meigs establishes Hiwassee Garrison Cherokee Agency in area adjacent to Neverbend Farm
Hiwassee Garrison consisted of the agent’s house and office, the sub-agent’s house, a small magazine to store ammunition, and small buildings to store provisions.

Sam Houston, aged 16, runs away from Kingsport, TN to Hiwassee Island
Lived near Hiwassee Garrison for 2 years, given Cherokee name “Ka’lanu” the Raven.

Hiwassee Garrison served as outpost for over 2,000 troops during the War of 1812 on their way to Alabama
Over 600 volunteer Cherokee signed up to join the US forces here. During the War of 1812, Jackson’s army crossed over this portage making this a critical point for trading routes.
